Statement:

Why I Am Running for Congress
Curtis Goodwin

I am running for Congress because I believe our country is strongest when we remember a simple truth: we are all people first.

I am not a career politician. My life has been shaped by real challenges, real mistakes, and real growth. There was a time when I struggled and had to rebuild my life from a difficult place. During that time in Rocky Point, Mexico, what helped me move forward was not politics—it was the compassion of others. People who chose to help, not judge. That experience has stayed with me, and it continues to guide how I see the world.

It taught me that dignity and respect are not political ideas—they are human ones.

Today, too many Americans feel overlooked, unheard, or pushed into opposing sides. Our national conversation often focuses on what divides us, rather than what we share. I believe we can do better than that.

I believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity and fairness. Discrimination is wrong, and it should not prevent anyone from having the opportunity to work, live, and build a life. At the same time, I believe our constitutional freedoms must be preserved and respected. A free society requires both protection from injustice and protection from unnecessary government overreach.

These principles are not in conflict. They require balance, responsibility, and thoughtful leadership.

My approach is guided by faith, accountability, and a commitment to serve. I believe we are called to treat one another with compassion, to stand for truth, and to seek unity where division has taken hold. That does not mean we will all agree, but it does mean we can move forward with mutual respect.

I am not running to be part of political division. I am running to represent people—listening carefully, acting responsibly, and staying grounded in the values that matter most.

I will work to support policies that protect individual freedoms, encourage opportunity, and reflect the voices of the communities I serve. I believe government should be effective, accountable, and focused on the well-being of its citizens.

I do not claim to have all the answers. But I will approach this responsibility with honesty, consistency, and a willingness to listen and learn.

This campaign is not about power. It is about service.

It is about restoring trust, strengthening our communities, and ensuring that every person is treated with fairness and respect, while preserving the freedoms that define us as a nation.

I am running for Congress to be a voice for that balance—and to serve with integrity.

Question Response Comments/Notes
1. Expanding federal enforcement efforts to prevent illegal border crossings. S* I support this because I believe that becoming an American citizen. It's an important step and ensuring that it's done the proper way is realistically. The key, whether it's just for being here for a work, permit or getting permanent residency, making our borders stronger, ensures that our country is safer.
2. Appointing federal judges who interpret the U.S. Constitution according to its text and original intent. S* The US Constitution should always be spoken in its original text.
3. Adding sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression as protected classes in federal nondiscrimination statutes. S* “I support protecting people from discrimination, including in employment and housing. But I also believe those protections must be balanced with constitutional rights and carefully written to avoid government overreach
4. Providing federal tax credits or scholarships that allow parents to choose private schools, homeschool, or online programs for their children. S
5. Prohibiting federal funds from directly or indirectly supporting organizations that perform, promote, or provide referrals for abortion. O* I support ensuring federal funds are not used to directly promote or facilitate abortion, while also making sure we preserve access to essential healthcare services and respect the complexity of this issue.
6. Prohibiting the federal government from discriminating against organizations based on sincerely held religious beliefs. S
7. Legalizing physician-assisted suicide for individuals seeking end-of-life assistance, regardless of terminal illness. O
8. Federalizing election law by removing state authority over elections. O
9. Eliminating the filibuster rule that requires 60 votes in the U.S. Senate to move most legislation. O
10. Increasing federal penalties for the sale and distribution of illicit drugs, sex buyers, and individuals convicted of human trafficking. S* I support the strongest possible enforcement against human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and coercion. These crimes destroy lives and should be met with severe penalties, aggressive prosecution, and expanded investigative resources to ensure offenders are caught and held accountable. Crimes involving the exploitation of minors should be treated with the highest level of seriousness in the justice system, with strict sentencing and no tolerance for repeat or negotiated leniency in severe cases. I support stronger penalties and enforcement against large-scale drug trafficking operations that fuel addiction, violence, and community destruction, while also distinguishing between high-level traffickers and individuals struggling with addiction who need treatment. I believe human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and organized predatory crime are among the most serious threats to human dignity. These crimes destroy lives and communities, and they must be met with strong enforcement, severe penalties, and a justice system that prioritizes victims and public safety. My focus is on ensuring these offenders are held fully accountable while strengthening prevention and law enforcement resources so these crimes are stopped before more lives are harmed.
11. Requiring federal regulations that ensure parental consent and stronger age verification for minors accessing apps, social media platforms, and online content. S
12. Allowing the federal government to regulate artificial intelligence to protect privacy, prevent bias, and safeguard public safety. O* There's already too much government overreach
