There is still work to be done at the Sheriff's Department. We have accomplished much during my first term, but bringing about cultural and organizational change takes time. The department had internal leadership for 40 years and had become very dysfunctional under the last Sheriff. We need to continue to make strides toward solid fiscal management. We need to sustain our efforts at crime control and expanding our capacity to address crime problems. Recruiting, staffing and compensation are areas we need to continue to work on. I have dedicated my life to public service, starting as a police officer in December 1981. I would like to continue that service for another term to enhance our efforts to professionalize the department and increase public service.

Question Response Comments/Notes
1. Denying federal funding to “sanctuary cities” that do not comply with federal immigration laws S* This is a decision for the federal government. Should the desire be have award of funds conditional on meeting certain criteria that is not unusual.
2. Allowing all parents to use tax credits, vouchers, or education savings accounts to enable children to attend any public, charter, private, homeschool, or online academy S* Educating our children is an important responsibility. We should demand more from the primary education system and encourage competition for better performance.
3. Expanding background checks to include guns purchased from private individuals O* There is currently no method to do this and it would be difficult to enforce.
4. Using taxpayer funds to support any organization that provides, promotes, or provides referrals for abortion O* This is not something for the Sheriff to decide and does not have authority over. As a Catholic I am personally prolife.
5. Prohibiting abortion except when it is necessary to prevent the death of the mother S* I personally support. However, this is not under the purview of the Sheriff. I am a Catholic and personally prolife.
6. Providing tax breaks to certain industries over others S* It would depend entirely upon which industries and how so doing would provide wider benefit.
7. Adding “sexual orientation,” “gender identity,” or “gender expression” to the protected classes of race, religion, age, sex, and ancestry in nondiscrimination ordinances S* I do not believe that discrimination in any form is acceptable.
8. Protecting a parent's right to seek professional counseling for their minor child with same-sex attraction or gender identity issues to help them reach their desired outcome S* Parents have the right to provide care for there children. There is no evidence in the efficacy of this type of counseling, however.
9. Setting minimum wages above the state minimum wage S* This is entirely up to the individual localities. It, in my opinion, is a bad business practice.
10. Protecting individuals and businesses from being required to use their artistic expression in a manner that violates their conscience S* A private business should be allowed to make its own business decisions. People then may chose which businesses to support or not.
